Participating in the Queen Guides programe wasn’t what I wanted actually. Since I was in Form 2, I always overheard my friend who was very active in Girl Guides activities that she intends to take the Queen Guides test. I never knew what a Queen Guides was all about. What I know then was that with the Queen Guides certificate and ‘rank’ you have a better chance of getting into local university as it will improve our co-curriculum marks tremendously.
Starting from Form 3, when Miss Low Beng Choo became our Math teacher, she had always adviced us to join the Queen Guide programe. However, once I heard from my seniors who also took the test that it wasn’t an easy road. I got a worried whether that I would be able to cope with my studies and all the things I have to face if I took the test. I thought to myself a lot of times and discuss a lot with my family members and friends. I hesitated a lot of times but finally I took the step.
At that time, my friends and I never knew what was the whole test was all about. We step into these whole new experiences without knowing what is ahead of us. At the first meeting, we were a task which is to finish tests and log book named ‘Tali Pekelilingan’. At that time I just knew I had to finish that file like the previous log books ‘Pra- persetiaan’. I don’t even know the purpose of the book and the practical test that we need to face ahead. Well, I can only use the term ‘swing along’ in this whole process. We were also not sure what else is coming for us and we just did whatever teacher wanted us to do. Completing another log books after another, test after test, camps after camps and many more are just like a daily routine. The road of becoming a Queen Guide seems to be never ending.
As we reach until Form 5 when stress started to come in when we need to cope with our studies as it was our SPM year, I felt like giving up. I just can’t seem to juggle my time well. While working on the Queen Guide programe, sometimes I find myself ditching my studies aside. And for the Queen Guide test, we need to do a 3 month service work before the final test. Thanks to Miss Low, she knew the Breast Cancer Support Group’s chairman and allow us to complete our service work at the support group. Every week, we have to spend at least four hours on the project.
And finally comes the final test of Queen Guides which was held in Malacca. Many other candidate of Queen Guide come from all over Malaysia and gathered in Malacca. From that camp, I got to know a lot of new friends and their experiences as a girl guide. I have learnt a lot from them and really admire their passions for guiding. It wasn’t an easy camp either. We were evaluated from all the activities we participated. After the thee days camp in Malacca, everything has come to end. All our hardships were paid off. We waited for our news and were very happy when we knew that all the 7 of us passed the test.
However, because of the camp in May, I didn’t paid much attention to my mid year examination. As expected, my results weren’t that good. However, I told myself at least the hard work that I paid for the past four years has born into a fruitful one. In June, we went to Terengganu to receive the award. We are now officially Queen Guides and we were proud to be the only representative from Johor state. All I can say was, this road wasn’t an easy road. You need a lot of perseverance and of course a good bunch of friends that will walk on this difficult path with you. Most importantly you need a dedicated teacher who is willing to spend their time on you.
I just want to have a shout out to Miss Low, for all the advices she has given me. I really thank her for taking her time to help us out in everything we need during the process of the tests. Without her constantly giving us all the resources, the seven of us wouldn’t be what we are today – Queen Guide. Thanks teacher. For those who are still under her guidance, please appreciate this opportunity because Miss Low is really a wonderful and passionate Girl Guider.
Other than that, I want to say thanks to my bunch of friends. Especially to Catherine Goh, T’ng Ju Chin, Eleene Chiu, Emelda Rose, Farra Ellyana and Jamie Fong. Thanks for all the time we had together. Thanks for walking this journey with me and I really appreciate that. Thanks 5 SN 1 09’ members for all the constant supports during our exam. THANKS.
